3 - Lonely Planet Guide
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket, and a sense of adventure.
That's all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime. They met on a park bench in Regent's Park and married a year later. For their honeymoon, they decided to attempt what few people thought possible – crossing Europe and Asia overland, all the way to Australia. It took them several months and all the money they could earn, beg or borrow, but they made it. And at the end of it all, they were flat broke… and couldn't have been happier. was too amazing an experience to keep to themselves. Urged on by their friends, they stayed up nights at their kitchen table writing, typing and stapling together their very first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap.
Within a week they'd sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. Two years later, their second journey led to South-East Asia on a shoestring, which led to books on Nepal, Australia, Africa, and India, which led to… you get the picture.
Fast-forward over 30 years.
As Lonely Planet became a globally loved brand, Tony and Maureen received several offers for the company. But it wasn't until 2007 that they found a partner whom they trusted to remain true to Lonely Planet's principles. In October of that year, BBC Worldwide acquired a 75% share in Lonely Planet, pledging to uphold Lonely Planet's commitment to independent travel, trustworthy advice and editorial independence.

7 - National Geographic Traveler
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/traveler/National Geographic Traveler is the world's most widely read travel magazine. It championed sustainable travel before it was cool and, eight times annually, celebrates journeys that are about place, experience, culture, authenticity, living like the locals, and great photography. It makes a distinction between tourism and travel, and stresses inquisitive not acquisitive trips. It employs storytelling and you-are-there photography to inspire readers to pick up and go. And, with the theme of "All Travel, All the Time," it eschews fashion and fluff in favor of articles that offer a strong sense of place, inspiring narratives that make readers take trips, and solid service information to help them plan those trips.
8 - Matador Travel
http://matadortravel.com/Matador is a meeting place. It’s a place for you to express yourself, tell others about your adventures, get meaningful travel advice, and take inspiration from the beautiful and remarkable things others like you have discovered all across the globe.
We started Matador because we love to travel. When we travel, we are constantly amazed and inspired by the people we meet, the cultures we're exposed to, and the adventures we have. We want to share our discoveries with you and allow you to share yours with us. The result will be a community of travelers, adventurers, and vacationers connected by their thirst for the unknown.
Travel is a vehicle for uniting individual voices, minds and ideas. As travelers, we are, in a sense, freelance ambassadors; not only do we return with stories of other cultures and ways of life, but we also share our own culture and ways of life with the people we meet along the way. We at Matador believe this exchange is essential to bringing about positive development in our rapidly changing world.
It’s sometimes easy to forget how vast the world is and how many interesting people are out there doing amazing things. Getting caught up in the day-to-day routine can make the world feel small and uninteresting. We want to inspire you, give you the opportunity to share your story, meet people who love the things that you love and give you the tools to plan new adventures.
So go get started! Discover over and over again how lucky you are to be on this planet and how much there is to explore. Whether you're taking a year off, or just those precious two weeks…the world is at your fingertips. Think of Matador as a global watering hole for creativity, culture, and adventures big and small. In the end, Matador will be what you make it.
Optimism without ignorance, confidence without arrogance, engagement without aggression – Matador offers a truly authentic connection to the world around you. Can there be any greater adventure?

9 - Boots n' All
http://www.bootsnall.com/About BootsnAll
You might be wondering what BootsnAll.com means (nope, nothing to do with making or selling boots) and where the name came from. Well...
The Trip
Perhaps not surprisingly, around drinks in an Aussie pub in 1994 a plan originated, leading to four lads (3 Aussies and one rotund Yank) going on a trip to the European Football Championships in May '96. As these 4 excited boyz gathered in Chicago in preparation for the trip, they discussed in depth the proper naming of this journey.
The Name
Names such as "Footy 96", "Euro 96" and other unattractive terms were tossed around. But, as they prepared for the trip, a search for the ultimate boot began. A boot that could be worn on a hike up Kilimanjaro or laced up for a game of footy on the Commons, but was also presentable enough for a night on the town. As this search intensified, so did the name for the trip. Somehow "BootsnAll" (pronounced "boots 'n' all") was decided on.
BootsnAll was born.

11 - Green Hotels
http://www.greenhotels.com/index.htmHaven’t you heard? Being green goes directly to your bottom line. Being green goes directly to a higher long-term value of your property. Being green goes directly to your front doors which open wide to bring guests back again and again. Being green goes directly to keeping staff long-term because management clearly cares for their health and well-being.
How does being green translate to your bottom line? When energy-saving measures are introduced, such as energy management systems, fluorescent bulbs, ceiling fans, linen cards, lights out cards, motion sensors for public rest rooms, meeting rooms, exercise rooms, etc., energy bills are much reduced.
When water-saving equipment and techniques are introduced, such as low-flow showerheads, 1.5 gpm aerators, serving water on request only in restaurants, 1.6 gpm dishwashing valves, low-flow toilets, waterless urinals, toilet tank fill diverters in older toilets and linen cards, water bills are reduced dramatically. A California GM received an award for reducing water usage at his property by two million gallons in one year. How? He fired the chef! The chef was well known for having water running in 4 or 5 sinks at a time defrosting food.
Waste hauling is a huge expense for a hotel which can be lowered drastically through recycling and avoiding wastefully-packaged products. Hoteliers can ask vendors to deliver products in minimal wrapping. Vendors can be asked to deliver products one day, and pick up the packaging materials the next day. The New Orleans Intercontinental started a recycling program and hired staff to separate the materials. Management was absolutely astonished to find that these employees were pulling $1,000 a MONTH of hotel property out of the waste stream—napkins, towels, spoons, etc.—all of which had clearly been discarded prior to recycling. A Chicago Hyatt reduced their waste hauling by 80%! They had the same experience as the New Orleans hotel, except their staff was pulling $3,000 to $10,000 a month of hotel property out of the waste stream.
Being green means guests, staff and management are healthier. There’s just no doubt that when odors, fumes, soot, droplets and residues of toxic, poisonous chemicals are not in the air, on our food or on anything we touch, we are not absorbing or breathing them. Sooner or later all properties will be sold, and any green property will demand a higher price because it’s value is much enhanced by lower utility bills per square foot, its healthier aspects and owner care.
None of us can be really green without the smart, innovative vendors who provide green products and services. Being green means supporting green vendors, listening to their sales staff, purchasing their products and services and cheering them on.
12 - Green Key Eco Rating
http://www.hacgreenhotels.com/index.htmThe Hotel Association of Canada's (HAC) Green Key Eco-Rating Program is a graduated rating system designed to recognize hotels, motels, and resorts that are committed to improving their fiscal and environmental performance.
Based on the results of a comprehensive environmental audit, hoteliers are awarded a 1-5 Green Key rating and given guidance on how to "unlock" opportunities to reduce operating costs and environmental impacts through reduced utility consumption, employee training, and supply chain management.
The HAC Green Key Eco-Rating Program is unique in that it is administered entirely on-line. Once a hotel has registered online for the program, they are granted instant access to the audit as well as to the tools and resources in the Members’ Only area.
The audit itself consists of “multiple choice” – style questions divided into the following 5 sections:
The approximately 140 questions that make up the entire audit relate to the following nine areas of sustainable hotel operations:
• Energy conservation
• Water conservation
• Solid waste management
• Hazardous waste management
• Indoor air quality
• Community outreach
• Building infrastructure
• Land use
• Environmental management
Each question has been designated a specific numeric value based on the environmental and social impacts of a particular action and its associated impact on guests, employees, management, and the local community.
The audit also takes limited-service hotels into consideration – in situations where a lodging property does not offer either Food & Beverage Services and/or Conference & Meeting Facilities, the hotelier is given the option to indicate that this is not applicable to their operation prior to beginning the audit. The audit is designed to take this into account when tallying their rating and their final score is not affected.
Hoteliers are encouraged to take their time completing the audit and to involve others in the process. For example, a GM may want to have the executive housekeeper complete the housekeeping section and the head of maintenance complete the Engineering section, etc.
Once all sections of the audit are complete, they simply hit “submit” and within minutes the system generates the hotel’s Green Key Rating and sends them a congratulatory email.
From here, the Hotel Association of Canada generates a property-specific written report highlighting their accomplishments and making recommendations for improvements. A plaque highlighting the hotel’s rating accompanies the final report.
It is important to note that the Green Key Eco-Rating Program is a voluntary, self-administered audit designed to assist a hotel in determining its current environmental footprint. How a hotel chooses to use the information and recommendations presented in their post-audit report is left to their discretion. The Hotel Association of Canada is not, at this time, performing regular on-site audits to verify a hotel’s rating but anticipates having a system of inspectors in place within the next year or so. In the meantime, program participants are informed, at the time of registration, of the potential for a spot-audit if the association deems it necessary.

16 - Go World Travel Magazine
http://www.goworldtravel.com/Back in 2003, we took a giant leap of faith. We started a full-feature travel magazine and decided to publish it exclusively online.
It was a stretch for us, a group of print journalists whose usual joy came from seeing our words in newsprint or on the glossy pages of magazines.
But we believed that media influence was changing — and that new tools could be found online. (Evidently we were right, for here you are.) Perhaps even crazier than publishing online was the topic we chose to celebrate — global travel.
Those were the days not long after 9/11. Americans, critics said, weren’t traveling overseas. In fact, many newspapers and magazines had cut back their international coverage. Who in their right minds would start a travel magazine that not only covered international travel, but focused on it entirely?
Well, passion can do crazy things to a person. We were — and still are — deeply committed to bringing the world to our readers, wherever they may be.
What have we found? That thousands of people around the globe share our deep love of exploring the world. Go World Travel now has subscribers in more than 50 countries, and that number grows each month.
You may not know it, but we also have a full-service video-production division in house. And we’ll now be using that crew to bring you some of our stories in video, just as a TV news station would. We’ve added a new travel magazine to our growing circle of magazines; goColorado.com brings the Centennial State to readers with video stories and insightful articles.

18 - Eco Travel
http://www.ecotravel.com/ecotravel2/index.cfmPeople travel far and wide to see beautiful places and take part in their favorite outdoor activities. That's how nature-based travel has become an important segment of the tourism industry. Almost every travel website has a category labeled "eco-tours." Why? For one, everything that seems to be environmentally conscious sells, but also because many of us think that a real vacation is being in nature, or being immersed in a different culture.
The problem is, there are no universally accepted standards for the definition of ecotourism. This is how an "eco-lodge" may dump untreated sewage in a river, and still call itself "eco" simply because it is located in a natural setting.
The founders of Ecotravel.com are avid travelers and have found themselves unintentionally patronizing organizations that harm the environment and have little respect for local cultures. We strongly believe that tourism can promote peace, benefit the local economy and help preserve the environment. For this reason we have decided to devote ourselves to building a site where one can find:
A searchable directory of travel organizations which includes information about their eco-philosophy and practices. This information is a starting point for the traveler to make an informed choice;
Thoughful commentary and articles on eco destinations, activities, and issues that may affect the choice of a future destination;
Travel tools such as guides, itineraries, and packing list.
The content that you find here is just the beginning. We intend to grow with your input whether you are a traveler, a tourism bureau, a park administrator, a private guide, a non profit organizations, a gear manufacturer or a tour operator.
Our Mission
Our mission is to bring together travelers, organizations, clubs, tour operators, researchers, and gear manufacturers in order to create a strong community that fosters and promotes responsible tourism - a community of "Ecotravelers."
Our timing is great! the United Nations has designated 2002 the International Year of Ecotourism (IYE). The World Tourism Organization was asked to take a leading role in the preparation and coordination of activities throughout the year. The main event of IYE will be The World Ecotourism Summit in Québec city in May 2002.
Who we are
Ecotravel was founded by four friends who enjoy the beauty and adventure of nature-based travel and want to encourage responsible travel to, and preservation of, natural destinations. Some of us have changed career paths in order to devote ourselves to achieving the Ecotravel mission.

21 - National Geographic Sustainable Travel Index
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/sustainable/index.htmlGeotourism is defined as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.
Geotourism incorporates the concept of sustainable tourism—that destinations should remain unspoiled for future generations—while allowing for enhancement that protects the character of the locale. Geotourism also adopts a principle from its cousin, ecotourism—that tourism revenue can promote conservation—and extends that principle beyond nature travel to encompass culture and history as well: all distinctive assets of a place.

Our boo.com is new, but we have years of experience in travel. We are the people behind Web Reservations International (WRI for short) and our other sites include www.hostelworld.com, www.trav.com, www.worldres.com and www.hostels.com.
In fact, we've booked travel for over 12,000,000 people from 150 countries since our first site launched in 1999. In doing so, we've learnt a lot about what people love and hate about booking travel. We also know that high commission environments always add to the price you pay, so our site operates off the lowest in the industry...or none at all.
In launching boo.com we've tried to create an experience taking what was once a tedious process involving multiple sites and deliver it under a single offering. Put simply, we think you should have a huge choice, and from there we should offer you the tools you need to quickly find what's right for you. 32 - Lets Go
http://www.letsgo.com/For 50 years, Let's Go has published the world's favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
Researchers hit the road for off-the-beaten-path exploration—from New York to Naples, Bangkok to Buenos Aires, Melbourne to Mexico. Back at Let's Go Headquarters, editors massage copy written on a Mediterranean fishing boat into fine, sparkling prose for readers both young and young at heart. The result is a series of books that is as accurate as it is sassy. We have generations of travel know-how under our belts, and much more to come.
We'll help you get to the edge of the world, and when you find yourself emerging from the untamed wilds onto windswept cliffs, we'll have your back.
Get off the tour bus. Let's Go.

33 - Safe Destinations
http://www.safedestinations.com/In our world touring that we do we are often asked by fellow travellers about what we consider to be the safest places for a vacation and really there is no definative answer. When we travel in groups during our organized tours we often get an unrealistic feel for the country we are visiting because all of us are moving about the attractions together in a large group and often with a guide.
On the other hand when we are doing backpacking or more rustic camping or eco-trekking we are often alone or travelling in small groups with our possessions and supplies on our backs and we can feel a bit more vulnerable. Also, as a woman, when I am alone and travelling I often am up against a different perception from the natives of the country I am visiting and must sometimes be extra careful when travelling alone. There are definately some countries that are not safe for women travelling alone but mostly a single female vacationing must have a certain level of confidence.
As a solo-traveller by nature I have spent years off the beaten path and staying in the best hotels all around the world and have seen my share of the good, the bad and the ugly as far as tour operators and even travel companions. Not all places I have visited have opened their arms to me as a voyager but after twenty years of wandering this lonely planet I can say that more often than not I have met some incredible people and seen some of the most breathtaking sights in the world and by all means have tasted the finest international foods and done some of the most phisically demanding and spiritually challenging things ever!Description retrieved from the page: Safest places to travel & the safest vacations around the world!
